If you are new to cannabis culture and are curious about what hash is and what’s involved in making it you are in the right place.
Today we look at the steps and items required to make your own hash at home.
What is hash?
Hash is an extract from the cannabis plant but not just the bud of the plant like regular marijuana. These little guys called trichromes come from the rest of the plant These trichromes are required to create hash. The only problem is that you need a lot of it to create a solid piece. These pieces are usually called bricks and resemble a dark soft substance like putty.
Before you smoke, vape or hit the pipe the first thing you do is grind the bud. When you do that you are in essence breaking apart the components of the plant. The residue left behind the grinding process is called kief. This is where we are going to find those tiny pesky trichromes to make our first batch of hash.
Now you might be wondering that this is a lot of work and what’s the point? Lets just get high, am I right? Does a wine connoisseur just want to get drunk?
The hash buzz is a little different than a regular weed buzz. A tiny portion of it can give you a short but wonderful effect that is usually a positive experience. Everyone is different and no one is saying that you will absolutely enjoy your high on hash. But it is quite economical and saves time because usually the buzz doesn’t last quite as long. It’s economical in the sense that every time you grind up weed it is leaving behind a gift. Collect enough of these gifts and you will have a solid piece of hash in no time. Take it from me, if you want to be the hero of a house party- bring hash.
How the heck do you make the stuff?
There are multiple ways to process and create your first batch of hash. Some people use dry ice, machines and silk screens. This tutorial is not going to be that complex. Lets make hash with common household items. If you pull this off and it’s a great experience then I would consider upgrading your tools to make more.
Here is what you will need:
- An empty wine bottle
- Three part grinder
- Latex or rubber gloves
- Oven mitts
- Turkey bag or parchment paper
- Some good tunes and a full bottle of wine to drink
Why the three part grinder?
In order to extract the trichromes to create the hash we need to produce kief. These three part grinders have a layer that includes a silk screen. The layer underneath the silk screen will contain a golden powder we in the bizz call, kief.
Kief is a substance that will collect over time when you grind up the bud. Every once in awhile it’s a good idea to scrape the kief and collect it in a small container. The more you have the more hash you can create. You do need a lot so you’ll want to collect at least half a handful to create something significant. That should be the perfect amount for this specific process of making hash.
Ok so lets get this process started. First lay out all of your kief on the parchment paper. It’s a very fine powder so make sure it is in a nice little pile. Next fold the parchment paper over the kief pile.
Pour some water into a kettle or a pot and bring it to a boil. Put an empty wine bottle with a funnel in it. Using oven mitts carefully pour the water into the bottle. Screw the cap back on the bottle (don’t use a bottle that needs a cork). Be sure to handle the bottle with oven mitts. It’s obviously very hot. The heat is required to help extract the trichromes from the kief pile.
Use the bottle to press onto the kief covered in parchment paper and press hard. This is the part where it can be physically exhausting. You will have to repeat this step quite a few times. Keep pressing the bottle over the kief for about 5-10 mins.
Put on some latex or rubber gloves. Unfold the parchment paper and you should see the kief take shape into a solid form. If it’s still a powder it means:
- You didn’t press hard enough
- The water lost temperature
- You didn’t press long enough
If so it’s not a big deal. Make sure the kief is back into a nice pile and try again.
If the kief turned into a flat patty pick it up and fold it into itself multiple times. Fold it as many times as you can. Put it back and fold the paper over it. Before you press again make sure your water in the bottle is still hot. If you want to use a thermometer make sure the water is at least 160-180 degrees F.
Don the oven mitts once again and press again with the bottle.
In step four you will be repeating steps 2 and 3 until you get the consistency you desire. The kief patty can start to turn a darker colour in some cases and the consistency should be “gummy”. You’ll know you have good hash when it becomes really sticky. You will have to experiment a few times to know how many times you should be pressing it.
Ideally it should change from a powder form to a single solid piece. The more you press the better outcome you will have. It can take anywhere from 10-100 presses but it depends on the amount and if you can keep the water hot.
Best way to enjoy
There are multiple ways to enjoy hash. Some people like to create a “salad” which is sprinkling multiple tiny pieces of hash into a joint. You will get the intense buzz of hash and when that dies down you can still ride high on the marijuana. Also hash tends to spark when it’s lit by fire. Watch out for that.
Try it in a bong, vape, or a pipe. Personally the best way to enjoy hash is with friends. No matter how you use it remember to do it responsibly and know your limit.
Here are a few devices you should consider if you want to get serious about the hash game.
