CBD Oil

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock the last few years you’ve probably been hearing a lot about CBD from cannabis plants. CBD can be extracted in many forms such as oil or pills. CBD has been known to help with arthritis, muscle pain and headaches. But what the heck is it and can it make me high?

CBD stands for cannabidiol (pronounced ka-nuh-bye-die-all). It is one of many cannabinoids in the marijuana plant but is the main ingredient for medical marijuana. It stimulates receptors in your body responsible for pain but does not have any intoxicating effects.

Inside your body you have two different cannabinoid receptors that are a part of your neurotransmitters. One cannabinoid receptor affects your appetite, mood, thinking, pain, emotion etc. The other cannabinoid receptor is responsible for your immune system. The THC from a marijuana plant will attach itself to these receptors giving you the “high”. CBD will stimulate these receptors so they are able to produce “endocannabinoids” so your own neurotransmitters can create their own cannabinoids. In english this means CBD can be used a pain killer and THC is a party.

What Can CBD do?

CBD is still being studied but it has wonderful features. According to a 2018 study CBD has been used to treat a wide variety of ailments including chronic pain and serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. It’s fun to think that a party drug might have medicinal qualities that can be considered a miracle drug but unfortunately there is no such thing. While CBD can be a great alternative medication if nothing else is working it doesn’t come without some risks.

Is it Dangerous?

This is a great question and something you should discuss with your doctor. We are all built differently and CBD may affect people differently. Over the counter pain killers such as Tylenol might not sound dangerous but if you have liver issues it certainly can be. The same goes for CBD.

According to the FDA there are a number of side effects that you should be aware of. That is why before you start ordering an entire jug of CBD you should speak to your doctor. Negative side effects range from liver damage, reproductive damage and serious side effects from mixing with other prescribe drugs. Especially drugs that can effect your liver.

Do I have to smoke it?

CBD cream

Of course not. CBD can be ingested in a number of different ways without rolling a joint or warming up the vaporizer. The most common way is to purchase CBD oil which can be added to beverages and food. CBD can also come in

  • Pills
  • Liquid
  • Powder
  • Edibles
  • Sprays

For example if someone suffers from arthritis they may feel severe pain in their fingers. Applying a good amount of CBD cream and rubbing it on your hands like moisturizer should do the trick within minutes. However the user should consider their own biology when using CBD such as body weight or any other medication they may be taking.

Can it cure cancer?

No. But hold a second there is something to it. While CBD can not cure cancer outright it can be a powerful weapon to fight it. If CBD were the cure for cancer I think we might all be chain smoking then chugging some CBD oil am I right? Maybe that’s just me.

A cancer patient would go through chemotherapy which is the tip of the spear in fighting the disease. CBD however can be used to help fight off the negative side effects of chemotherapy. If you have known anyone who has had to go through it or you went through it yourself you know it is a tough and painful treatment. CBD can help alleviate those painful side effects.

There’s more good news. There are studies that have shown that CBD can actually prevent the growth of cancer cells. Combine CBD with aggressive chemotherapy may give more cancer patients a fighting chance. Of course with all medical science there needs more time to further study the effects of CBD.

Why Was This Illegal?

War on drugs

Depending on where you live it still might be illegal. Unfortunately because of the “war on drugs” marijuana got a bad rap and still does to this date. Weed is considered a party drug and a good source of income for drug cartels besides cocaine and heroine. The prohibition of the plant has put the medical practices of researching CBD back decades in my opinion.

This is why CBD is so popular today. Now that marijuana is legal in multiple states and in the true, north strong and free CBD can be made available to those that really need it. We are still learning about this mysterious plant but there is no question about it’s medical abilities.

The baby boomers are aging and some of them need medication to deal with ailments. I personally know of one older gentleman in his 70s who started to grow his own plants. Through some research he was able to extract and create his own CBD oil. He rubs the oil on his hands on a regular basis to deal with crippling arthritis. Now he can open and close his hands quickly and painlessly for the first time in a decade.

If he grew his own cannabis plants for a natural medicine to help alleviate his pain five years ago he’d be a criminal. Why was it illegal? Politics, lobbyist, Regan, Nixon, Refer Madness etc.

So I’ll leave this article with a quote from the late great George Carlin: “Don’t just teach your kids to read teach to question what they read”
